Editorial responsibility: Valusage Business Advisors Technical Practice (Technical Practice)

Direct answer

A 13-week cash-flow forecast should begin with opening cash, use realistic weekly collection and payment dates, separate committed from uncertain flows, test base and downside scenarios, and be updated weekly against actual results with named actions for material variances.

A 13-week cash-flow forecast is a short-horizon operating tool. It should show when cash is expected to arrive, when commitments fall due, what assumptions are uncertain and which actions protect liquidity.

Build the weekly cash bridge Start with opening bank balances, expected collections, supplier payments, payroll, rent, debt, tax, licences, capital spending and other committed outflows. Use realistic collection dates rather than invoice dates and document the evidence supporting major receipts.

Separate committed and uncertain flows Label receipts and payments as committed, probable or uncertain. Keep customer concentration, delayed collections, one-off renewals and tax or payroll commitments visible rather than hiding them in an average assumption.

Run scenarios At minimum, test a base case and a downside case. Management may also need a delayed-collection or expansion case. Each scenario should state the change in assumptions and the action that would be triggered.

Review weekly Compare forecast to actual, explain variances, update the next 13 weeks and assign actions. A forecast is not a guarantee and should not replace approved accounts, treasury controls or entity-specific tax advice.

Why use 13 weeks?+

It provides a sufficiently detailed short-term view for collections, payroll, suppliers, tax and commitments while remaining practical to update.

Should invoice dates equal forecast cash dates?+

No. Forecast receipts should use realistic collection expectations supported by customer evidence and history.

Does a forecast guarantee liquidity?+

No. It makes assumptions and timing risks visible so management can act earlier.
