Direct answer

A slow or inconsistent month-end close is usually a process problem, not a people problem. Here's the checklist we use to keep it under control.

Most UAE businesses don't lose control of their books all at once — it happens one skipped reconciliation at a time. By the time management asks for a profit and loss statement and it takes two weeks to produce, the underlying cause is almost always a missing month-end close process, not a lack of effort.

What a proper close actually covers

A month-end close is not just "posting the invoices." At minimum it should cover bank and card reconciliations, receivables and payables ageing, accruals and prepayments, fixed asset and depreciation schedules where relevant, and a review of any manual journal entries against supporting documents.

The output should be a set of financial statements you'd be comfortable showing a bank, an investor, or your own board — not a draft that needs another week of clean-up before anyone can use it.

A working checklist

1. Reconcile every bank and card account to the statement balance, with no unexplained differences carried forward.

2. Clear the suspense or uncategorised transactions account to zero, or document why a balance remains.

3. Age receivables and payables, and flag anything more than 60 days overdue for follow-up.

4. Post accruals for costs incurred but not yet invoiced, and prepayments for costs paid in advance.

5. Review the trial balance for any account that moved in an unexpected direction month over month.

6. Lock the period once reviewed, so prior-period numbers can't be edited without a visible trail.

Where this typically breaks down

The most common failure point isn't any single step — it's the absence of a fixed calendar. If close happens "whenever there's time," it competes with everything else and consistently loses. A written close calendar with owners and deadlines for each step is usually the single highest-leverage fix.

The second most common gap is treating the close as a bookkeeping task rather than a review task. Someone other than the person doing the data entry should be reviewing the output before it's treated as final.

Where Valusage fits

Our Financial Statement Preparation and Management Reporting and Financial Analysis services are built around this exact checklist — we review your reconciliations, closing entries and schedules, then issue a closing checklist and an unresolved-items tracker rather than just a set of numbers. This is a non-audit accounting review: we don't perform or sign a statutory audit.
