DMCC, IFZA, or Meydan? A Framework for Comparing UAE Free Zones
Published by Valusage Advisory Team
Most "which UAE free zone is best" content is published by a free zone reseller with a referral fee riding on your answer. We don't sell free zone licences, so here's a more useful version: the criteria that actually distinguish free zones for most SMEs, without ranking one as universally "best."
The criteria that actually matter
Activity list: not every free zone licenses every activity — confirm your specific activity is permitted before comparing cost. Visa allocation: tied to your office package, and the number you actually need drives real cost differences. Office requirement: some free zones mandate a physical desk or office above a certain visa count, others don't. Setup and renewal cost: headline packages often exclude visa costs, medical, Emirates ID, and office rent, which can double the effective annual cost. And banking relationships: some free zones have stronger track records with specific banks, which matters more than it should for how smoothly account opening goes.
Mainland vs free zone is a separate question first
Before comparing free zones against each other, confirm free zone is the right call at all — mainland licensing allows direct trading within the UAE market without a local distributor in most activities now, which free zone companies historically needed. If your business model depends on direct UAE mainland customers, that comparison matters more than which specific free zone you'd otherwise pick.
Why we don't publish a ranked list
Free zone fee structures and activity lists change often enough that a ranked comparison is stale within months of publishing — and the right answer depends entirely on your activity, visa count, and banking needs, not on which free zone has the best marketing. A structured comparison against your specific requirements is more useful than a generic ranking.
Where Valusage fits
Our Free Zone versus Mainland Business Setup Advisory (from AED 5,000) compares both options against your specific activity, visa needs and budget. Our Company Incorporation and Business Setup service (from AED 5,000) then handles the actual incorporation coordination once you've decided. We coordinate the process — government, licence, visa and office fees are separate and paid directly to the relevant authorities.
