AI in the Finance Function: Where It Actually Saves Time for UAE SMEs Today
Published by Valusage Advisory Team
"AI will transform finance" is either an overpromise or an understatement depending on which specific task you're talking about. Stripped of the hype, there's a genuinely useful, fairly narrow set of finance tasks where current AI tools save real time for an SME finance function today — and a much longer list where they don't yet, reliably.
Where it genuinely helps today
Document data extraction (pulling structured data from invoices, receipts and bank statements into your accounting system) is one of the most mature use cases, cutting manual data entry meaningfully. Categorisation and coding suggestions for transactions, first-pass drafting of routine correspondence and reports, and anomaly flagging in large transaction sets (surfacing unusual entries for human review, not replacing the review) are the other areas with genuine, demonstrated time savings.
Where it isn't reliable yet
Anything requiring judgment on ambiguous transactions, final review of statutory filings, and decisions with real financial or compliance consequences still need a qualified human reviewing the output — current tools are genuinely useful as a first pass, not as a final decision-maker, and treating them as the latter is where we see mistakes happen.
The realistic starting point
Rather than a broad "AI transformation" initiative, the businesses getting real value start with one specific, well-bounded task (usually document extraction into the accounting system), measure the actual time saved, and only expand from a working example rather than a broad rollout with no proof point yet.
Where Valusage fits
Our Artificial Intelligence Readiness Assessment (from AED 3,500) identifies the specific, well-bounded finance tasks worth automating first for your business, and our Digital Transformation and Workflow Automation Advisory (from AED 6,500) scopes those workflows in detail. We assess and scope; we don't build or sell the underlying software ourselves.
